  • The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training® is the world's largest endurance sports training program. The program provides training to run or walk marathons and half marathons or participate in triathlons and century (100-mile) bike rides. Since 1988, more than 360,000 volunteer participants have helped raise more than $850 million. Click hre for more information.
  • Dr. Nick Padron is a physician who has multiple myeloma. Dr. Padron has, from diagnosis, been looking for a better answer than the typical treatments available for myeloma. His search led him to Johns Hopkins University where he found researchers working on treating the Myeloma Stem Cell, the precursor cell that is believed to create all the myeloma cells that represent our cancer.
Dr. Padron has acquired a drug that is not yet available to the general public and has been using that drug in what he hopes will provide a cure for him. His presentation was entitled: Myeloma Cancer Stem Cell
  • Dr. Charles (Chuck) Wakefield is the Director of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program at the Baylor College of Dentistry (BCD) in Dallas. Dr. Wakefield also happens to have multiple myeloma and is a patient of Dr. Brian Berryman.
    • Dr. Wakefield has written the professional protocol for dental care for those taking oral and IV bisphosphonates (such as Aredia and Zometa), as he recognizes that the problem of Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ) is a very serious problem for all of us with myeloma. Click here for Dr. Wakefield’s article.
  • Your North Texas Myeloma Support Group was, once again, honored to have Dr. Brian Berryman present to us at our September 8th meeting. His presentation was entitled: Transplantation and Multiple Myeloma. We were also honored to have Laura Brougher, Transplant Coordinator, who talked about “Side Effects of Transplantation and Treatment.” Many of our members already knew Dr. Berryman and Laura from their transplant experiences at either Baylor or Medical City. Here is Dr. Berryman's presentation
  • This is a four-part series of articles on bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. The series will prepare you to ask your transplant team meaningful questions and help you to understand the answers. This article provides an overview of bone marrow and stem cell transplantation and explains the differences between autologous and allogeneic transplants. This four-part series is written by Edward Agura, MD, an advisory panel member for the PLWC Editorial Board. Dr. Agura is Director of the Program in Blood and Marrow Transplant at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX.
  • Testing History Template: Have you wondered which of your laboratory test results to track or how best to track them? Wonder no more. Developed by our own Dennis McClure, these templates will help you organize and record your test results that you should track as a Myeloma Survivor. There are two types of tools:

    1. Automated MS-Excel Spreadsheet Tool - Contains automated formulas and automatically creates trend line charts for some of the more important tests. Trends are usually more relevant than individual test results. The "Directions For Use" should answer most questions and provides suggestions. All versions of the MS-Excel tools can be personalized and customized (see "Directions For Use") before printing to fit each patient better
(To open/save these to your machine, please right click on each link and do a "Save Target As". Once saved on your machine, you can open it using Word or Excel)

    Instructions and directions for use
Actual Automated Template in MS-Excel Format
    2. Manual Use Forms - Don't have a computer or know how to use MS-Excel? Have a family member, friend, or support group member print out a supply of Manual Use Forms to fill in with pencil or pen. While the MS-Excel version of this manual use form can be personalized and customized before printing to fit each patient better, the PDF forms can not be modified.
(To open/save these to your machine, please right click on each link and do a "Save Target As". Once saved on your machine, you can open it using Excel or PDF Reader)

If you encounter any problem with downloading these files, please e-mail Yelak. If you have any problems with the template itself and/or have any questions related to the template, please e-mail Dennis.

  • Patrick Beal introduced Dr. Berryman to us, although few, if any, of us were unfamiliar with our favorite myeloma doctor. The presentation was interesting on many fronts, including the rapid progression of scientific advances in cytogenetics both for prognostic value as well as determining treatment choices.

Beside the frontline single or tandem stem cell transplant choices, many studies are being done on chemo combinations that include Velcade or Revlimid, as well as thalidomide. Dr. Berryman went through all of the standard treatments, at this time, leaving some of the more exotic agents for a future presentation. Remember that we will have Dr. Berryman with us again in September; at that time, we will have the larger Beasley Auditorium on the floor above our usual meeting room.
Our group gave Dr. Berryman a well-deserved round of applause when he concluded. We are so very grateful that he is willing to take time out of his weekend to bring us this important information. He also answered quite a few questions from the floor before we allowed him to escape.

  • Myeloma 101: A series of articles called Myeloma 101.  These articles are written by Peter Tischler, and are based on information gathered from a variety of medical and experiential sources over the past eight years.

  • NTMSG Interactive: is our member database--a collection of all of our experience with Multiple Myeloma. By making it easy for members to locate and contact other members who have had similar experience, we hope to facilitate discussions between them and help them be better prepared to deal with the complexities of this disease.
  • BANK ON A CURE™ : During the last decade brilliant scientists mapped the human genome providing a bridge to understanding human DNA. During the first decade of this century the International Myeloma Foundation will cross that bridge by pioneering the first global Myeloma-specific DNA bank in history: Bank On A Cure™
